Haley's finds some of Mr. Key's old letters from the war. Buying ration stamps, volunteering at the Red Cross, and losing loved ones were the norm for the people who are coming alive for Haley through the letters. Not only do the letters contain general history, but for Mr. Key, they contain personal history. That's why Haley just can't understand why Mr. Key doesn't seem to care about them. In fact, he doesn't seem to care about much in his attic at all. Could Mr. Key be searching for something more important to make his life worthwhile?
